biomass apprentice is ready for action

Orthios North Wales

Busnes@LlandrilloMenai and the Orthios Group are proving that opportunities do exist for talented young people to get into quality engineering roles.

Dafydd Morris Jones is an apprentice mechanical engineer with the Orthios Group, which is based at the old Anglesey Aluminium site in Holyhead.

Orthios has ambitious plans to open an eco park and energy centre which will house a biomass power plant, an on-land prawn-growing aquaculture facility, and a hydroponic indoor vegetable-growing facility.

The energy centre will form the core around which each of the Orthios Eco Park businesses will operate. There will be five independent 60 MWe power modules, which will gasify approximately 1.5 million metric tonnes of biomass per year.

It is expected that the park will be able to provide 650 thousand homes with electricity by 2020. The excess heat and CO2 will be recycled into the eco park to be reused for enhancing the cultivation of fish and vegetables.

In September, Dafydd will start his day-release course - a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering - with Coleg Menai in Bangor. He will also be working on an NVQ over the summer as part of his apprenticeship framework. He will be supported in his studies by a work-placement officer, who will visit him in the workplace.
