7 big projects that should be on the radar of every north wales business

Wrexham energy centre could create jobs and business opportunities

Big development projects usually create big opportunities for local businesses. So it’s worth being in the know.

There’s at least seven major projects underway or being planned in North Wales right now – including a nuclear power station, a prison, an eco park and a tidal lagoon.

And the fact is, you need a lot of skills, products and services to build and operate big facilities like these.

Some of these things are usually outsourced – and if you’re in the right kind of industry, you might be able to bid for that work and win a valuable contract.

So whatever your business does – construction, environmental services, cleaning services, ICT, logistics or whatever – it’s worth keeping your eyes and ears open for contract opportunities.

Here’s a quick overview of the seven biggies in North Wales at the minute.

1. wylfa newydd

This new nuclear power station could see as many as 24,000 companies in Wales benefit from its construction and operation, as well as from the decommissioning of the old power station nearby.

2. hmp berwyn

Construction of the new prison – one of the biggest in Europe – is nearing completion, but the site should continue to create all kinds of supply chain opportunities when it’s operational.

3. parc adfer

This new energy recovery facility is expected to support around 300 construction jobs and up to £30m of contract opportunities during its lifetime.

4. wrexham energy centre

A proposed £300m investment that could support around 515 jobs and sorts of supply chain opportunities during its construction.

5. anglesey eco park and energy centre

Work is set to begin in 2017, creating up to 1,000 construction jobs – and a lot of opportunities in the building sector.

6. colwyn bay tidal lagoon

Early feasibility work is being undertaken, but this project could represent an £8bn investment for North Wales.

7. menai science park (m-sparc)

A science-focused business park, with links to Bangor University. Construction work got underway last month (October 2016).
